If you are in crisis right now

This clinic is an outpatient practice. It is not an emergency or crisis service, and messages here are not monitored around the clock. If you or someone you care about is in immediate danger, call 911.

For a mental health crisis at any hour:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — call, text, or chat 988. Available 24/7.

  • NJ Mental Health Cares, New Jersey's behavioral health information and referral line — 866-202-HELP (4357), 8am–8pm weekdays.

  • NAMI-NJ HelpLine — 866-626-4664, 9am–4pm weekdays.

  • Peer Recovery Warmline — 877-292-5588.

  • 2NDFLOOR youth helpline — 1-888-222-2228, 24/7.

Once you are safe, we are glad to talk about ongoing behavioral health treatment. Outpatient behavioral health services work best once the immediate danger has passed.

Conditions we treat

Most people arrive with a cluster of symptoms rather than a tidy diagnosis, and many have never had mental disorders formally assessed before. The first visit sorts that out, and the behavioral health services that follow are built around what it finds. These are the challenges patients across NJ most often bring to this practice.

Anxiety disorders and panic

Generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and panic attacks are among the most treatable anxiety disorders, and they respond well to evidence based treatment. Anxiety treatment may involve cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), medication, or both, and therapy can help build coping strategies for anxiety that outlast the treatment itself. If chronic stress has narrowed your world — avoiding calls, driving, or rooms full of people — that is treatable, and it does not require hitting a crisis point first.

Depression and mood

Low mood that has outlasted its cause, loss of interest, sleep and appetite changes, or the flat exhausted feeling that makes everyday life effortful. Feeling overwhelmed by tasks that used to be routine is often the first thing people notice. Prescribing is one route forward; therapy can help build coping strategies for depression, and the two together generally outperform either on its own. We look at what has and has not helped before, including anything you have already tried.

ADHD in adolescents, young adults, and adults

Attention, follow-through, and organization difficulties, whether newly suspected or diagnosed years ago. Care includes assessment, prescribing where appropriate, and practical coping strategies for work and school.

Trauma and PTSD

Intrusive memories, hypervigilance, numbness, and sleep disruption after a traumatic event. Evidence-based therapy is effective for treating trauma-related issues — prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, and EMDR have the strongest track record. Psychiatric care can steady symptoms enough that trauma-focused therapy becomes possible.

Obsessive compulsive disorder

Intrusive thoughts and the rituals that build up around them. Obsessive compulsive disorder is frequently misidentified for years before anyone names it, and it is more common than most people assume — the National Institute of Mental Health puts past-year prevalence at 1.2% of U.S. adults and lifetime prevalence at 2.3%.

It responds to specific, well-established treatment. Exposure and Response Prevention is a key therapy for OCD and carries the strongest evidence of any behavioral approach to it; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is effective for OCD symptoms more broadly. On the prescribing side, options for OCD include SSRIs like fluoxetine, often at higher doses and over longer trials than in depression. Exposure and Response Prevention is delivered by a specialist therapist rather than here — this clinic handles prescribing and refers for the therapy.

Bipolar disorder

Careful diagnosis matters here, because bipolar disorder treated as unipolar depression can worsen. Ongoing care aims at emotional stability across both directions of mood.

Later-life mental health

Depression, anxiety, grief, and cognitive concerns in older adults, including how prescriptions interact with the rest of your physical health and current drug list.

Autism-related mental health needs

Support for co-occurring anxiety, depression, and attention difficulties in autistic teens and adults, in a supportive environment that does not treat autism itself as the problem to fix.

Who these behavioral health services are for

This practice serves adults, adolescents, and older adults across NJ who want psychiatric care from one consistent clinician rather than a rotating roster. Most clients arrive in one of a few situations.

  • Starting from scratch. You have never had behavioral health treatment and are not sure what you need. The free call sorts that out before you spend anything.

  • Restarting after a gap. You were treated years ago, life changed, and the old plan no longer fits the challenges in front of you.

  • Leaving somewhere that felt like a conveyor belt. Fifteen-minute visits, a different face each time, nobody tracking the whole picture.

  • Already in therapy and needing a prescriber. Your therapist is doing good work; you need medication managed by someone who will actually coordinate with them.

  • Supporting someone else. Families and partners often make the first call. We can talk with you about how to help, within the limits of privacy law.

When families are part of the picture

Families usually notice changes before the person living them does — sleep, withdrawal, irritability, a slipping grip on everyday tasks. With your written consent, family members can be included in visits or kept updated on the plan. Where family conflict is itself driving the challenges, we will refer you to family therapy rather than treat around the edges of it.

Adolescent care involves families by default. For adult clients, nothing is shared without consent.

A single clinician who actually knows your name

Teresa is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with 5 years of experience delivering behavioral health services to teens, adults, and older adults across NJ. She earned her MSN at Walden University in 2021.

Her approach combines evidence-based medication management with compassionate care that is never rushed or judgmental. No rushed visits. No handoffs. You see Teresa — every time.

Her extensive experience across diverse settings shapes how she works: patient centered care, plain explanations of what a medication does and why, and genuine empathy for people who have been rushed through fifteen-minute visits elsewhere.

Evidence Based Care: What Behavioral Health Treatment Looks Like Here

This is a small clinic in Maplewood, NJ, and the mental health services reflect that. You get comprehensive mental health services in the sense that matters — evaluation, diagnosis, medication management, supportive therapy, and coordination — delivered by one person who remembers your history without reading it off a screen. The services are deliberately narrow so that the services offered are done properly.

Behavioral health treatment here is built on evidence based care: treatment choices follow what the research supports for your diagnosis, adjusted for your history, your other prescriptions, and your life. You leave each visit knowing what changed and why.

Your well being is the measure that matters, not a number on a rating scale. A realistic goal is not permanent happiness. It is emotional stability, workable coping skills, and enough relief that you can build resilience and get back to the parts of life that matter. Wellness here means function restored, not a mood permanently managed. For many patients that looks like lasting emotional wellness maintained with a light touch — a few visits a year rather than a permanent project.

Medication Management, Therapy, and How They Fit Together

Medication and therapy do different jobs, and most people do best with both.

This practice provides psychiatric prescribing plus supportive therapy — brief, focused therapeutic conversation inside your visits. It does not replace weekly psychotherapy.

Therapy services this clinic does not provide in-house:

  • Weekly individual psychotherapy. Many patients see a separate therapist for ongoing talk therapy while Teresa manages medication. We coordinate with your therapist when you want us to.

  • Family therapy. Family therapy and couples work are not offered here. When family conflict is central to what is happening, we will refer you to clinicians who specialize in it.

  • Spravato treatment. Spravato is available for treatment-resistant depression — depression that has not responded to multiple adequate medication trials — but Spravato treatment and other interventional procedures are not provided at this clinic. If your care plan points that direction, we will say so and help you find a program.

  • Intensive outpatient and inpatient care. If you need a higher level of care than outpatient visits, we help arrange it rather than stretching a plan that will not hold.

If you are already in evidence based therapy and just need a prescriber who will actually talk to your therapist, that is a common and welcome arrangement. Evidence based therapy and prescribing work best when the two clinicians are speaking to each other. Good high quality therapy paired with well-managed medication consistently produces better positive outcomes than either alone.

Questions patients ask most

What is a PMHNP and how is it different from a psychiatrist?

A PMHNP is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner — an advanced practice registered nurse with graduate training in psychiatry, board certified through the ANCC. In New Jersey a PMHNP evaluates, diagnoses, and prescribes psychiatric medication, the same core functions patients come to a psychiatrist for. The practical difference most clients notice is time: appointments here run longer than the fifteen-minute check-ins common elsewhere.

Do you accept my insurance?

Eighteen plans are listed above, but directories lag behind real credentialing status, so we verify your specific plan during the free 15-minute call before you pay for anything. If your plan is not among the insurance accepted here, ask about a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement, or about the sliding scale.

Can I do telehealth if I live outside Maplewood?

Yes, for anyone physically located in New Jersey at the time of the visit, when telehealth is clinically appropriate. You do not need to live in Maplewood or the nearby areas. Some situations — a first evaluation, or a new prescription that needs closer monitoring — are better handled with in person visits, and we will tell you when that applies.

What happens on the free 15-minute consultation?

A short conversation about the challenges that brought you here, what you have already tried, insurance and cost, and whether this practice is the right fit. No diagnosis, no prescriptions, no obligation. If we are not the right fit, we will say so and point you somewhere better.

Do you prescribe controlled substances via telehealth?

Sometimes, within current federal and New Jersey rules, and only when clinically appropriate. Certain medications require an in-person evaluation first. Because these regulations have changed repeatedly in recent years, ask during your consultation rather than relying on anything written here.

How soon can I book?

The clinic is currently accepting new patients. The free 15-minute call is usually available within a few days, and initial evaluations typically occur within one to two weeks after that consultation.

Where can I get free mental health counseling in New Jersey?

NJ Mental Health Cares (866-202-HELP) is the state's behavioral health referral line and can point you to low-cost and free options. NJ 2-1-1 maintains listings by county, every New Jersey county has a designated screening center for urgent needs, and community mental health centers offer sliding-scale care. University training clinics are another route to low-cost therapy services. This clinic is a private practice and is not free, though the 15-minute consultation is. Free mental health services in NJ generally run through the public system rather than private clinics.

How can I get therapy without insurance?

Several routes exist. Ask any provider about a sliding scale — this clinic reduces self-pay rates by 20% to 50% based on your situation. Request a superbill and submit it to your plan for out-of-network reimbursement. Community mental health centers set fees by income. Training clinics at universities offer supervised therapy at reduced rates. Open Path Collective connects people to reduced-fee therapists nationally.

Where can I find free online mental health support?

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers call, text, and chat 24/7. NAMI New Jersey runs free peer support groups for clients and families, many of them virtual. The Peer Recovery Warmline (877-292-5588) is for non-emergency support. These are wellness and peer support resources rather than mental health care from a licensed prescriber, and they work best alongside treatment rather than instead of it.

What are the legal requirements for mental health screening in New Jersey?

New Jersey operates a designated screening center system for people who may need emergency evaluation, and screening services are available in every county. Specific requirements vary by setting — schools, employers, and the court system each have their own rules, and they change. For anything with legal weight, confirm current requirements with the NJ Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services rather than relying on a clinic page.
