Common questions
Questions patients ask most.
Six answers to the first things people want to know. For more, see our About page or start with a free 15-minute call.
What is a PMHNP and how is it different from a psychiatrist?
A PMHNP is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner — a registered nurse with graduate training (MSN or DNP) and national board certification in psychiatry. In New Jersey, PMHNPs assess, diagnose, and prescribe under a collaborative practice arrangement with a licensed physician. The clinical difference is often more integrative: PMHNPs typically combine medication management with brief supportive therapy in one visit.
Do you accept my insurance?
We work with 18 plans — including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Horizon BCBS, Medicaid, Oscar, UMR, and UnitedHealthcare — contingent on benefits verification before your first visit. If your plan isn't listed, we provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement, and sliding-scale rates are available for self-pay patients.
Can I do telehealth if I live outside Maplewood?
Yes — telehealth is available to New Jersey patients when clinically appropriate. We commonly serve patients from Newark, Elizabeth, East Orange, Livingston, Millburn, Chatham, West Orange, Short Hills, and Irvington. Your first visit can be in-person or telehealth, depending on your clinical needs and current prescribing rules.
What happens on the free 15-minute consultation?
We talk briefly about what brought you here, what you're hoping for, and whether our approach fits your situation before you complete intake paperwork or schedule an evaluation. No clinical decisions are made on the call. If we're not a good match, we'll point you toward a colleague who might be.
Do you prescribe controlled substances via telehealth?
We prescribe Schedule II medications (including ADHD stimulants) within current DEA telehealth rules and New Jersey state regulations. For adults, New Jersey requires an initial in-person evaluation at our Maplewood office before Schedule II prescribing begins, plus quarterly in-person follow-up visits for the duration of treatment. A narrow exception exists for patients under 18 with documented parental consent. We'll walk through the specifics on your free consultation.
How soon can I book?
Most new patients schedule an initial evaluation within one to two weeks. Call (908) 201-3904 to book directly, or use the free 15-minute consultation as your first step.
